Excellent post. Understanding your business process BEFORE starting your process automation effort is essential. Automating an inefficient manual process only magnifies the root problems of the process itself. Moreover, without having a solid understanding of the times and costs of each of the steps in the business process, you run the risk of having a failed process automation initiative.
By first modeling your business processes in a sandbox environment, you can identify bottlenecks and inefficiencies in your process. Resolving these situations in your business process, and then engaging in your process automation effort, will ensure you are not surprised by initial process failures.
