Enterprise Application Integration (EAI) BPM

Historically, business applications were built in a stovepipe manner, usually to serve the needs of a single department in the organization. As more applications grew in support of different departments, these point solution applications created information silos that had no understanding of process flow. For example, a company might have a customer’s revenue in the financial application, sales history in a CRM package, and support information in a call center database. There was no way to manage a process across these applications.

EAI Provides Connections, but is Rigid and Inflexible

EAI succeeded in transferring data from one application to another, but it failed to deliver a higher level of customer value because EAI is system-centric and does not have the ability to orchestrate business processes, trigger events, or handle the exceptions, change and collaboration needs of a business process.

BPM Opportunity

Our customers use Ultimus to provide the process and people-centric capabilities on top of existing system-to-system connections provided by a tool such as Microsoft BizTalk server. In these situations, Ultimus provides for a rich, intuitive user interface and a rules engine that orchestrates the workflow by managing the presentation of information, rules, roles, routing, approvals, escalations and documentation. In addition to providing basic BPM capabilities, Ultimus has best-of-breed people-centric capabilities for:

Handling Exceptions: Every process will have exceptions and special cases. While EAI is rigid, Ultimus has a suite of exceptions handling capabilities built in.

Facilitating Change: People and organizations are not like systems. While systems are typically in place for a long time, business processes can change quickly. BPM must adapt quickly because people change jobs and responsibilities frequently or go on vacation. Rules also change due to business conditions or new policies.

Supporting Collaboration: Since successful BPM initiatives need business and IT to work together, Ultimus provides a collaborative design and development environment.

Providing Usability and Visibility: After delivering BPM-based solutions for thousands of customers worldwide, Ultimus understands that BPM is only successful when people embrace the new way of doing business. This is why Ultimus has added hundreds of usability features than create a natural, intuitive working environment.
