Not All BPM is Alike |
While BPM can produce great savings, not all BPM systems deliver on the Automation and Adaptation capabilities required to maximize Total BPM Lifecycle ROI. The expected savings from BPM can erode when affected by: Slow Launch, Poor Adoption, or Poor Adaptation as shown below. |
Slow Launch – Projects can be delayed by people and technology. Teams can take months to discover and map a process, especially if they are concerned that a ‘hard-coded” process will be inflexible and difficult to adapt later on. Companies should watch out for applications that, while robust, require custom coding and are time consuming to deploy. Instead, look for products that have done the hard work up front and created a no-coding and programming-free environment to design, deploy and automate processes.
Poor Adoption – People are unique. Companies that want their work teams to support new ways of doing business should bring in technology that works in a natural and intuitive way. When companies bring in mechanical or inflexible work systems, people will work around the system and return to the old, inefficient, and manual processes of the past.
Poor Adaptation – In the real world, neither people nor processes are static. People change jobs and take on new responsibilities, while new employees join and leave an organization. Processes may change to reflect new competitive pressures or regulatory requirements. Even well-defined processes must handle exceptions and special cases on a routine basis. If an automated process cannot readily adapt to these important changes, people will go outside the process to get their work done. |
